The annual gynaecological check-up includes an examination, an ultrasound and, when due, a smear and HPV test. Irregular periods, heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, discharge and vaginal infections are assessed at this visit.
Findings such as cysts and fibroids are mostly followed with regular ultrasound. Contraception options and the HPV vaccine are discussed at the visit.
Common questions
How often should I have a smear test?
Usually every three to five years, depending on your results and age. It can be combined with an HPV test.
When do irregular periods need a visit?
If irregularity lasts over three months, or with very heavy or in-between bleeding.
Do cysts and fibroids always need surgery?
No. Most are monitored. Surgery depends on size, symptoms and your pregnancy plans.
