Pregnancy care covers regular check-ups from the first positive test until delivery. At each visit the mother’s blood pressure, weight and general condition are reviewed and the baby’s growth is followed on ultrasound. Screening tests, the detailed anatomy scan and the glucose test are planned according to the week of pregnancy.
Where there is an older maternal age, high blood pressure, diabetes or a multiple pregnancy, the frequency of visits and the tests are adjusted to the person. The timing and type of delivery are planned together as the pregnancy progresses.
Common questions
When should I come for my first visit?
After a positive test, usually between weeks 6 and 8. This visit confirms where the pregnancy is and checks the heartbeat on ultrasound.
How often are check-ups?
In most pregnancies monthly until week 28, every two weeks until week 36, then weekly.
What is a high-risk pregnancy?
Pregnancies that need extra monitoring for mother or baby, such as older age, blood pressure, diabetes or twins. The plan is set per person.
